8th INTERNATIONAL DAY
Bring on the rain; bring on the wind and multiple
power cuts! Despite all these obstacles CHMS, BVI 8th
International Day was a resounding success shared by family, friends,
faulty and staff and of course our beloved children.
This year’s array of beautiful and authentic
International costumes dazzled the eager gathering and made for an
amazing rainbow of rich hues which in turn reflects the vast cultural
diversity we share at CHMS, BVI. We are truly an International school
in every sense of the word.
The programme included a wonderful duet by sopranos
Via Donovan Hodge and Anya Rhoden, readings on Dr. Montessori’s life by
Ahan Dhar, Sean Wong, Molly Woodruff accompanied by wonderful
illustrations of Dr. Montessori.
“There are places in the world” took the assembled
audience around the globe with the Elementary students singing a
cappello due to the power cuts.
Peace Makers were well represented by Miss Maduro’s
young class and this part of the programme concluded with a rousing
rendition of Teaching Peace sung with enthusiasm so as to avoid seeing
Mrs. Morgan strut her stuff.
Everyone was then invited to our traditional Circle
of Peace and Friendship before experiencing a cornucopia of
International dishes which were a joy to the eye and pure pleasure for
the taste buds.
A huge thank you must go to the parents whose
efforts produced the most amazing costumes and food and helped make this
8th International Day one we will always remember.
Here at CHMS, BVI we strive to be more than an
excellent educational institute. We strive to be more than a place to
grow and learn. Your faculty and staff are dedicated to making every
moment of your child’s life a memorable one to add to your memory banks
and your bank just received another wonderful deposit.
We hope you enjoyed CHMS, BVI’s 8th
International Day as much as we did.
FIELD OF DREAMS 10TH SEPTEMBER 2006
This year saw a
Field of Dreams with a different focus. Having spent the last six years
beautifying our home away from home the consensus among the Faculty and
Staff was to not “guild the Lily” but to concentrate on maintaining the
beauty we have all helped to create over the years.
Thus the birth of
“Adopt a Spot”, a plan to invite families to adopt a small area of the
grounds and keep them free of trash, dead leaves and general Keep the
BVI Beautiful by keeping our little area of it sparkling. There is
still time to sign up. Find the plot layout on the Elementary classroom
door and help to beautify our school.
There was a
smaller turn out than in previous years. This the Faculty and Staff
attributed to the long and grueling hours we all put in over the
previous three weeks to move two entire classrooms, lock, stock and
barrel and re-design and implement a combined Elementary class in the
Great Room.
Moving, sorting,
searching, shifting and supporting is a rewarding but tiring activity.
However the family and friends in attendance enjoyed Friendship and
Fellowship under the burning sun and helped to celebrate the birthdays
of two of my favourite people, Jude Kinkead (7) and Kapil Dhar (age yet
to be determined).
Everyone commented
on the beauty of the grounds, thanks to Lenny Stoddard our Maintenance
Manager, the inspirational classrooms, thanks to the hard work of all
Faculty and Staff and the sense of renewal and re-commitment to our
Montessori ideals, faculty, family and friends old and new.
The event saw the
return of our wonderful Alumni who were dragged before the attending
crowd by Mrs. Morgan and embarrassed as only teenagers can be when
praised in front of others.
The event closed
with an impromptu, heart felt plea from Miss Danielle to speak of our
school positively as we are a good, wonderful and unique school and we
all deserve the power of positive words and positive thoughts.
Another wonderful
Field of Dreams Party.
PEACE BEGINS WITH
ME! PEACE BEGINS WITH ME! Were the words echoing in the hills over
Diamond Estate as the Children Faculty & Staff from Century House
Montessori School BVI celebrated their 3rd Annual Peace Walk
at their campus on Friday 11th November.
Peace studies have
always been a part of the Montessori Curriculum devised by the first
female Doctor in Italy, Dr. Maria Montessori in 1905. The children at
CHMS BVI participate in daily peace studies as early as three years old
and learn conflict resolution skills which they use on a daily basis.
Montessorians the world over believe that Peace begins with the actions
of the very young and children who are surrounded by adults who model
peaceful behaviors will in turn emulate those behaviors.
The children shared
their own Peace poetry and Peace songs and discussed the Peace makers of
the world and their individual impact on our present day lives. Then
everyone enjoyed a symbolic Peace Walk around the school campus
accompanied by a rousing chorus of “We are teaching Peace in what we do
and what we say” by Ms. Lynsey Debeers Elementary Class.
7th
Annual International Day
CHMS BVI recently celebrated its 7th Annual
International Day at its campus on Diamond Estate.
An idea created by UNICEF a number of years ago and adopted
by Montessori Schools the world over; International Day is designed to
celebrate our cultural diversity and ethnic heritage. The celebration
is designed to enlighten our children to a deeper understanding of other
cultures, cultures that need to be embraced, shared and celebrated, not
feared and ignored.
Family, friends and
visitors enjoyed a feast for the eyes and ears as the pupils at Century
House Montessori School BVI dressed in national costumes from all over
the world and entertained the crowd with a multicultural presentation
including songs, poems and music from Japan, the US, and Europe.
The Day concluded
with a sumptuous luncheon provided by parents, families and friends.
The cultural diversity of CHMS BVI’s student bodies was reflected in the
food with amazing dishes from St. Lucia, BVI, Israel, USA, Italy,
Jamaica, India and South Africa.
Lecture Series
In a continued
effort to acquaint the public to the Montessori Method of Education,
Century House Montessori School, BVI held the first of its termly
lectures for the present school year. CHMS BVI have been offering
lectures since the schools inception in 1998 to help parents, care
givers and the general public have a better understanding of this
amazing method of education for children from 3 –12 and which will
celebrate it’s 100 years in 2006.
The lecture was
held at their campus on Diamond Estate and was about the day in the life
of a pre-primary child (ages 3-6) at a Montessori school. Parents were
introduced to all the different areas in the classroom. The parents
were given the opportunity to use the Sensorial, Language, Math’s and
Cultural materials. A slide show was presented giving a visual of
exactly what Montessori children are involved in each day.
This, the first in
a series of lectures, discussed the importance of the early years and
the impact it has on the child’s educational, social and spiritual
growth.
The purpose of the
evening was to give a better understanding of the Montessori philosophy
and to encourage parents to use some of what they learned in their daily
lives at home with their children.

Field of Dreams
Century House Montessori
school, BVI celebrated it’s 6th Annual field of Dreams party on
Sunday 19th September with friends both old and new, families and children
too under a sun kissed sky and balmy breezes.
The territory is
indeed blessed by the presence of a Montessori school offering parents
choices in their children’s academic futures and offering the
government of the territory a partner in education.
As usual the event
brought out Montessori families and friends in a gathering of love,
respect and friendship.
Many beautiful trees
were planted to assist in the beautification of the school and the island
and many wonderful dishes were brought to the table to reflect the international
and cultural diversity that is Century House Montessori School BVI.
The event culminated
in a moving speech by Principal/Founder Mrs. Patricia Morgan who paid
respects to her faculty and staff, without whom her dream would not
now be a vibrant, loving and stimulating place for children to learn,
be loved and nurtured.
Mrs. Morgan also
paid tribute to the founding children, the pioneers who blazed the trail
and set the standard of academic excellence, which is the hallmark of
CHMS BVI. These pioneers have graduated to two of the top ten boarding

to Cedar School.
